Uganda Breweries Limited has partnered with Uganda Blood Transfusion Services (UBTS) to run a six-day blood donation drive that is aimed at collecting 600 units of blood to boost the National Blood Bank collections.
The drive will take place from Monday, September 2nd 2019 to Saturday, September 7th 2019 at six locations: Nakawa Market, Uganda Breweries Port bell, Kitintale Market, Ham Towers, Constitutional Square and Luzira Market.
UBL has committed UGX 5m towards provision of logistical supplies for this cause.
According to Catherine Khabure, Uganda Breweries Human resources Director, the organization has previously partnered with UBTS to mobilize blood donation drives around the city. Last year’s blood drive collected 433 units of blood.
According to Statistics from World Health Organization (WHO), Uganda has an annual demand of about 340,000 units of blood, but falls short by over 100,000 units. The organisation recommends that 1 per cent of blood be collected annually from the population.
To qualify as a blood donor, someone has to be above the age of 17 years, weigh more than 45kg, and is in good health.
