Something that started as fun ended in tears, many had boarded a yellow boat which was heading to Mutiima beach to have a glance of what is called life on the water but this didn’t happen as the boat capsized at 8pm in Mpatta sub county, Mukono district. It is allegedly said that more than 30 people have died and other bodies are still being retrieved from the lake by the police and the UPDF.

The boat had more than 120 people aboard, according to witnesses the boat had been in a poor mechanical condition. “We were supposed to go on the 9th but the cruise was postponed to 24th because the boat had some issues and it was being repaired, what we didn’t know is that it was not worked on as we were told by the boat owners” a witness said.

The set off was supposed to be at noon but it was delayed again as the final checkups were done to ensure that all was well, and within no time the party had started on. Most of the people on board had no life jackets though some had got them. “The life jackets were there but only some got as they were few and so the organizers told us to go just like that without them” he added.

Prince David Wasajja, a brother to Buganda King Ronald Mutebi, singer Iryn Namubiru and city businessman, John Fredrick Kiyimba commonly known as Freeman were among the people who were on board though they were rescued.

By press time we had not yet confirmed the exact number of people who have died since the police and the UPDF are still looking for more other bodies.
